1. Tóm tắt lý thuyết thì quá khứ hoàn thành (Past perfect tense)

1.1. Cách sử dụng thì quá khứ hoàn thành

• Diễn tả một hoạt động đã xảy ra và hoàn thành trước một hành động khác trong quá khứ.
  • VD: I had gone out, when she came. (Tôi đã rời khỏi nhà trước khi cô ấy đến)
• Diễn tả một hành động đã xảy ra và kéo dài tới một thời điểm nhất định trong quá khứ.
  • VD: By the time I graduated, I had gone to work for 2 years. (Trước khi tôi tốt nghiệp, tôi đã đi làm được 2 năm.)
• Diễn tả một hành động xảy ra trước một thời điểm nhất định trong quá khứ.
  • VD: Hoa hadn’t used to meet her until yesterday (Hoa chưa từng gặp cô ấy cho đến hôm qua.)
• Diễn tả hành động điều kiện không có thực trong quá khứ trong câu điều kiện loại III.
  • VD: If I were him, I wouldn’t buy this car (Nếu tôi là cô ấy, tôi sẽ không mua chiếc xe đó.)
• Dùng để thể hiện sự thất vọng về sự việc nào đó trong quá khứ. (thường dùng cấu trúc điều ước trong quá khứ.)
  • VD: Hoa wishes she had come sooner. (Hoa ước cô ấy đến đó sớm hơn.)

1.2. Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ hoàn thành

Một số từ xuất hiện trong câu sử dụng thì quá khứ hoàn thành cần chú ý là:
